... and i have been mulling over the geopolitics of mordor, spurred on by the argument on some absurd blog somewhere that while it may be energy-secure it could hardly be food-secure

my counter is that the eastern (unmountained) border has excellent access to khand, rhûn and the vinyards of dorwinion, but exactly what mordor offers these regions in trade-exchange is unclear, economically speaking

(there are the slave-tilled so-called fertile regions of nurn and the shores of the sea of nurnen, true -- but slaves are a drain on security forces in times of war, and themeselves need feeding to be much use)

Mordor has lots of arms to offer, no?

Presumably when on a war footing the armies of Mordor are expected to eat their enemies! (This is not an infallible resource though)

certainly i think orcs could live better off the land than men or fussy old elves!

arms! yes! mordor sells arms to the lakemen of esgaroth to protect themselves from the horrible goblins of mt gundabad, who it has also armed!

Also office space. Barad-Dur is very large indeed. The commute isn't great mind you and transport links could be better.
