at first guess this is about incidents during the french revolution -- i think historical (rather than novels about it) but may be wrong abt that, as i can't quickly see my way to any answers

ii. is Charlotte Corday who stabbed and killed Marat (in his bath, supposedly) - at her trail she said she'd killed one man to save 100,000, itself an allusion to Robespierre's justification for the execution of Louis XVI
