Two of these relate to the Apocryphal adventures of the Prophet Daniel:

vi is from 'Bel and the Dragon', in which Daniel shows that the custom of leaving food out for the idol Bel to consume is a scam, and Bel's priests are taking the food for themselves.

viii is Susanna, who was falsely accused of impropriety by two bros who had in fact been harassing her. Daniel cross-examined them, and one key point of difference between their testimonies was what kind of tree the incident had taken place under.

Tales from the Apocrypha? w/o googling I'm speculating if Gudger, Ricketts and Woods appear in Hardy's Jude the Obscure (which I haven't read for decades) and whether there's a book in the Apocrypha called Jude?
