Oh wait gosh maybe it really is! Because I think i. is "when constabulary duty's to be done (to be done)" from Pirates of Penzance, which implies with v. that the theme is CONSTABLES!

OH! And vii. is from Henry V, and although I'm not 100% sure who the speaker is, given the theme I suspect it's the Constable of France.

ii. That is BENTON FRASER the Canadian Mountie in Due South! This is the first question in the entire quiz I knew straight away :) Diefenbaker is a husky/wolf cross who went DEAF as a result of said rescue (but can lipread).

x. John Constable did indeed live AND DIE on Charlotte Street, in the house next to this church:

He also had a house in Well Walk in Hampstead. FANCY.

scott wouldn't have to pay anything for the copyright if he wrote the book -- i think this is some kind of collector or publisher

(actually i know it is as i just poked about in the chambers biographical dictionary: kerry is absolutely on the right track)

Found him! Ian Macfadyen was made Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle in 2009.

Medals = impressive but it's the tassles that really make this outfit for me. I wonder if the epaulettes flap up and down when you give 'em a yank?

it turns out (thx, google) viii is another Sherlock Holmes-related question - kicking myself that I didn't recognise it before. Constable Downing's thumb is chewed by the mulatto in The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge.
