v: is Uther Pendragon, I think -- ie Arthur's dad. Merlin is the wizard, and in the John Boorman version, the adultery takes place in full armour, which you'd have though would be a bit er memorable for the recipient, who I can't recall right now.

Wells wrote a "New [something or other]": Machiavelli? I believe coffee is in order!!

if I squint I can see a link between Uther P and my googled answer to vi), which I'd think would be super-tenuous but iirc is actually v similar to a link they used last year.

OH! But it IS the link! Because if it is, the answer to ii) falls into place (thanks to basic googling).

and he is siring arthur since i didn't make that clear: on the lady igraine -- the rival is called gorlois, and is being killed in battle as this happens, i think -- igraine goes on to marry uther; her daughters by gorlois are elaine, morgause and morgan le fay

later arthur sires mordred on morgause, hence the doom that befalls him

had to look all that up: it is all very muddly

would a wasps' nest (hornet's nest?) be perceived as an apiary?

Stumbled on vi) by googling - the answer is someone I've never heard of (and indeed the source I found was about his mother Suzanne, not him) (he's a painter, if that helps re: theme).

viii can't be as straight forward as it appears can it (he says without looking at a list of popes)?

i thought it might be pope joan! except she didn't exist so doesn't have a birthplace

there are several one-off pontiff names though: zosimus is the only one i can ever remember, and i don't know where he was born obv

Yeah I'm looking at a list of popes now - many many one-off names, thought one of them might mean "unique" but none of them seem to. Er.

John Paul II was the only Polish pope, right? and [brain strain] Adrian VI was only English one? I know there were squillions of Italian ones, so maybe it's something like this?

I ended up listening to the shipping forecast instead of the end of the cricket last week. :( I had not heard it in AGES though!

vii) Might hateful weeds lose (have lost?) not only their beauty, but also their utility?

yup! so the theme is "begins with u" -- and the wells is the "modern utopia" not the "new machiavelli"

From Uther and Utsira I even thought "begins with ut".
