old forgotten wars: "onion gravy"
Mar. 6th, 2010 06:03 pmdriving back from anerley thinking about food, and what i was going to eat tonight, the phrase "onion gravy" popped into my head, along with a little burst of irritation: i seemed to be recalling someone, long long long ago, proposing OG as a necessary part of a meal, and something about the self-satisfaction of their delivery irritating me enough that a glower splinter of the irrititation remains, when i can no longer remotely recall who this was...
i spent half the journey trying to reconstitute what had annoyed me: and have not yet really done so -- part of what's strange about it is that i like and am quite happy to make and devour gravy feat.onions, but find myself cross and defensive that this in some fashion constitutes the apparently unacceptable "onion gravy": if you accused it of being OG i wd hotly -- and very evidently irrationally -- attempt to refute you!
so wtf? i *think* this may have been someone who didn't know much about food or cooking laying down the law about what was the essential ingredient to turn a meal from ho hum to astonishing, and then picking on and stoutly insisting on something pleasant but commonplace, in the course of the affair larding it with a (in context) pretentiously fancy name... ?
anyway i am going to make gravy and start by frying onions in butter but if you think this is onion gravy i shall come to yr house and FvCK YOU UP DUDE
now where is my "dubdobdee is a mental" tag?
