at the risk of sounding like the lex, my itunes is takin an age to load new material -- is it bcz the libraries on an external hard dfrive fed thru a hub, or is the disc getting a bit full ("23.18 GB available")

Almost certainly the former, from those options - 23GB is loads of space, hubs and external drives can be sloooooow.
