i think the UNDERPANTS GNOMES are a reasonable cultural touchstone, everyone knows what south park is, even if they've not seen that episode, right?

the issue wasn't arcane popcult knowledge per se, it was the tolkien-esque need to correlate the high elves and the deep elves across all subcultural clusters
