meet the neighbours
Aug. 9th, 2009 09:11 ami: we had a block barbecue last night, as we do every year -- people from the 32 flats meeting and eating, pleasant summer evening in east london, nice
ii: i wanted to get up early and write, so i said my goodbyes and sloped off, got into bed nice and early, still enjoying the distant sound of nice people chattering away nicely
iii: about one i was woken by very audible voices -- downstairs neighbours A, B and C had decamped to the patio outside A's flat, and carried on talking
iv: but the chat sounded a bit strained -- i turned off my fan and listened a bit (sound carries exceptionally well up from down there -- i should probably tell them this one day)
v: A was locked out, it seemed; his girlfriend had also turned in early, and fallen asleep
vi: A&B were trading increasingly baroque insults, about every aspect of one another's lives -- very repetitively
vii: C (who seems a sensible and grounded fellow) (i like all three but know C the least, he lives in a different block) was trying very ineffectually to calm everyone down
viii: tempers rose, until people were discussing -- though not threatening -- clattering one another
ix: B was persuaded, i think by his partner, that "A wasn't worth it" -- and went indoors
x: A and C continued talking for a while, in much lower voices -- A was still locked out, his girlfriend still (apparently) asleep
xi: i turned the fan back on to drown this out, and snoozed again
xii: to be woken an hour later by B showing a friend round his garden: "this is bay, this is sage..." -- they were a bit further away (some of the garden is round the corner) and even with the fan off i couldn't make much out
xiii: i snoozed again...
xiv: and was woken AGAIN by (i think) A and his finally woken girlfriend having a fierce argument, in whispers
so this morning is by no means as early as i planned and i am rather less rested -- it's possible they can smooth things over by virtue of both saying "i'm sorry, i was very drunk last night"; or else not, which is going to be fun as regards block projects (perhaps luckily, B is planning to move to France shortly)
