ok HURRAH for starters
i: i went to see my friend R's stand-up slot last night, in some trepidation
ii: in fact thx to not havin eaten all day and it bein COLD and when i got there the general mood was ANXIOUS (8 super-keyed-up noob stand-ups surrounded by their gung-ho support network) and even tho there were nice ppl there, inc. an old friend i haven't seen for some time, i went into grumpy shut-down
iii: and R was on last which meant that i had to sit through SEVEN RUBBISH STAND-UPS all from the same course R has been on (not quite fair: there was a LARGE GIRL from devon called sus!e who was very good, but is NOT a noob but quite practiced; she did the course in 2005)
iv: so be 9.30-ish i was VERY HUNGRY AND CROSS AT MY RUBBISH LIFE (<---? this is a blood-sugar thing obv not a facts-on-the-ground thing: i have a nice life) and assuming the whole evening wd be grim, once R got up and was as rubbish as the others (i saw him do a try-out stand-up six years ago and it was pseudo-fr4nkie how3rd and he lost his nerve about three minutes in and was ruthlessly heckled offstage)
v: except he was really good, in a REALLY unexpected and risk-taking way that he totally pulled off -- if you can imagine a very plump gay bearded steve wr!ght, the surreal one not the one in the afternoon; he was absolutely comfy standing on stage looking back at the audience doing nothing, which worked really well, and just got people chuckling by some sort of zen non-action thing, and he did NO transitional business between gags, which everyone else seemed to fumble badly, and he flipped back into camp a couple of times almost as an hommage for something we recall fondly but yes, it is gone and past and rightly we have moved on
vi: and then we went back to f!rst out and i had a huge mixed salad and we (several of us and him) discussed how good he was and how bad almost everyone else was; and he -- still totally buzzy and i think a bit astonished -- mostly talked abt totally technical things, which was interesting
vii: so anyway i must remember not to underestimate my pals!
