reading to my dad again over the weekend, i was hugely entertained by the chapter on leonhart fuchs: one of the founders of modern botany
he is entertaining less because of his pioneering groundwork in the science of flower classification than because of his EXTREME VITUPERATIVE ARGUMENTATIVENESS -- basically he considered everyone else a worthless numbskull and was not slow to say so, elaborating comically offensive motivations for any rival who dared question anything he did (he also fell out with his publishers)
best of all: the FUCHSIA is named after him
