i: how do you get a cd out of an imac when the spit-out machinery won't actually spit it out?
ii: my friend R came round last night from some tips on how to up his internet profile (he's a stand-up since only recently); i went through a few quite basic things and was feeling he had surely wasted his journey over to mine as they were all terribly obvious and lame, about creating a network of links -- plus the imac was being embarrassingly slow and clunky on like myspace and etc (and it et his CD an wonuldn't spit it out) -- but R was delighted, which made me realise that, just via ilx and lj timewasting, i am actually by no means the least useless
iii: i haven't yet got my spensive laptop up and running because i haven't had time to do it systematically -- and my plan was to make the imac my info hub, as it's plumbed into broadband already, and wireless the laptop off of it, but now there's a CD stuck inside it

i Hrmm someone had this problem on my friendslist in the last week, except different (a disk in a macbook) - their solution was to press down the eject key during startup.

ii As I'm sure he knows, Chortle.co.uk's the thing for comedians, though I imagine there's a barrier of entry made of either fame or cash. Also they have an embarrassment of Russells :)

i: yeah i tired that -- it grinds away like it's trying to spit it out but actually it doesn't ever get far enough out to grab (or even be visible)
ii: chortle is his immediate goal -- i thought there would probably be a threshold (for example a minimum number of gigs), and that it's by invite somehow, but he already has contacts...

Is there a tiny hole that a straightened paper clip/staple might fit in? Again this is repurposed floppy disk info that you probably already know.

ok that is useful to know but it does nothing in this case -- i think a spring has gone (or similar) in the eject mechanism, which is clearly operating but not delivering... it can't push the CD far enough out any more, so i think someone will have to open the box up

Er do you have iTunes installed on it? Sometimes my eject button does nothing because it's waiting for me to press the eject thing at the bottom of the iTunes window instead (argh it is such rubbish software but that's another rant). Anyway, it might do the trick even if it's a not-music CD.

nice idea -- and entirely plausible yes -- but it no longer seems to believe there's a CD in there

i am looking into getting an independent mac repair call-out, as i think the solution requires a screw driver

(haha he will open it up and there will be NO CD INSIDE bcz i. it vaporised, or ii. it came out by itself and hid, or iii. hurtled out so fast last night that it passed through my body w/o touching the sides and is emebdded in the wall behind me)
