the rules as they have evolved:
a: give nice full answers and anecdotes!
b: say if googled or not, and leave a bit of a while for people to answer non-googlingly
c: you're obviously allowed to look ahead at future questions as (first) this was published in a national newspaper and i can't stop you and (second) i can't stop ME either, and have done exactly this

iii is a beckett play! is it endgame? and iv is surely turnip townsend? so theme might be ends

I think the Prittle Brook one is SOUTHEND (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prittle_Brook) tho it certainly sounds like something out of Tolkein!

vi) I think this is an C18th agricultural improver and google gets me to Turnip Townshend. I think I half-remember this from geography lessons at school - growing turnips puts something back into the soil.

i wz gnna ask when the last chandler's shop might have shut its doors but then i remembered i walked past one yeserday in tott ct rd: viz a shop mainly selling perfumed candles (but no bread or cheese any more)
